Giant Roasters

A friend at work that knows how much we love s'mores bought us these Giant Roasters in Nebraska - they are HUGE!  Quite honestly, I'm not even sure they would fit inside a graham cracker (not that I can promise they'll make it that long in the house)...  Greg and Joshua were enjoying them right out of the bag!  YUM!!!

BUSTED!

National Punctuation Day

Seriously, I am not EVEN making this up!  National Punctuation Day was last Friday!  How could I have missed it?!?!  Yes, there is a reason the apostrophe goes either before or after the "s" - it changes the entire meaning of the sentence!  ...which is why I keep getting recruited to proof homework, meeting minutes, and real estate forms!  I really need to keep my grammar skills to myself!!!  hehe :-)

Really ~ Almost October?!?!

The current temperature reads 78-degrees - the entire weekend was hot, dry, and beautiful!!! It still feels like summer ~ especially since we're still wearing flip flops, riding bikes, grilling out and eating on the patio, and enjoying popsicles!!! I know, I know... the snow will be flying soon enough!

Harvest Moon!

Appropriately enough, we finally had rain and cooler temperatures yesterday, just in time for the official first day of fall!  Be watching TONIGHT as we experience the Harvest Moon.  I hope we have clear skies so that I can shoot some pictures!!!

...from Mother Nature Network...
~ for the first time since 1991, a full harvest moon shines down on the fall equinox.

Autumn arrived in the world Wednesday night, September 22, 2010, at 11:13pm EST. And for the first time since 1991, the harvest moon was full in the early hours of September 23, 5:17 a.m. EST. A full harvest moon so close to the autumnal equinox is the “traditional definition” of a harvest moon. And as National Geographic reports, the world is celebrating.

An autumnal equinox occurs when the sun sets due west and rises due east. It marks the change of the season and also when day and night falls into balance, lasting for roughly the same equal lengths. After the autumnal equinox, the days become notably shorter. The harvest moon refers to the autumnal moon at its brightest, when farmers worked to bring in their crops by its light. This year, these two events coincided in the wee hours of September 23 in the northern hemisphere. This event will not occur again until 2029.

The autumnal equinox happens when the sun’s disk crosses the celestial equator, an imaginary line that projects out from the Earth’s equator. If a person is standing directly at the Earth’s equator, he or she can see the sun pass directly overhead on this day. But don’t expect an equinox to yield a perfectly mathematical day, as time is peculiar. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII established the Gregorian calendar, which we use today to account for these irregularities in time.

Judith Young is a professor of astronomy at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. As she explained to National Geographic, most people will never see the full 12 hours of sunup and sundown on the autumnal equinox. The sun sets and rises at an angle for people who don’t live at the equator, and most people have hills and foliage obstructing their view of a sunrise or sunset. Further, the Earth’s slightly elliptical orbit alters the length of days. According to Young, "We arrive at the September equinox a day late, because we were going a little bit slower [around the sun] in July, and we arrive at the March equinox a day earlier."

Nonetheless, the world is celebrating the harvest moon and autumnal equinox as it has for centuries. The Mayans built the pyramid of Kukulkan in Chichin Itza to honor the occasion. As the autumnal equinox occurs, a play of light creates the illusion of the serpent god Kukalkan slithering its way down the pyramid. China continues to celebrate the harvest moon with festivals. They commemorate the moon goddess, whose origins are linked to this time, as well as the family.

The September harvest moon and equinox is not the only special cosmic event this month. Jupiter is the closest it’s been to the Earth since 1963, and the largest planet in our solar system was aligned with Uranus on the 17th of this month.

Jefferson Lake

We LOVE Jefferson Lake! We headed there yesterday for a day of fishing and relaxing! It was an absolutely beautiful day ~ not a cloud in the sky!!! Joshua had a few bites, and Hannah actually caught two little guys, but their friends caught two keepers!  We took a picnic lunch and spent 6 hours on the shoreline fishing, talking, digging (the kids built a channel), and just relaxing...  The aspen trees are changing and it was gorgeous ~ even saw a bald eagle soaring overhead!

Fabulous Celebrations!!!

Happy 80th Birthday today, Dad! Thanks for being a REAL example of love, hard work, determination, faith, support, and so much more! As Hannah said in her dinner prayer, you are the best Grandpa! We are so blessed!!!
We hiked to the top of Green Mountain here in Lakewood on Saturday morning. Dad, my three sibs, my hubby, our kiddos, and our pet ~ what a great time! Five plus miles of beautiful sunshine, fresh air, great conversation, and lots of laughter and smiles!!!
That night we gathered for dinner at Mike and Gail's house. Dad's 80th birthday and Dad and Mom's 55th anniversary are both this week ~ huge reasons to celebrate! We had all sorts of family comfort foods including Dad's bourbon balls, Hannah's queso, Mom's wild rice casserole, Aunt Irene's tator tot casserole, and of course the Lutheran staple, Jello!!! No shortage of desserts either ~ chocolate cake, lemon meringue pie, and a plate of yummy mini-desserts!!!
Why the trees? But of course ~ Dad is thrilled to be heading to the hills again on Tuesday to cut trees for a man in Evergreen!!! Notice that one is cut in half :-)
Oh yes, we clinked glasses so they had to kiss - visited about their wedding, shower, and honeymoon - and just enjoyed being together!

...watching the Rockies game...
Sunday morning we joined them for church at Concordia where all 4 of us were confirmed. Fun to have the congregation sing Happy Birthday and Happy Anniversary out in the narthex!
...and see what can happen to your car when you're in church???
Thanks for setting an amazing example for all of us during your 55 years of marriage!
Love you!!!
You'd think after all of this food and activity we'd be down for naps! But no, we headed over to the Festival Italiano in Belmar for pizza, sausage and meatball sandwiches, and strawberry and vanilla gelatos - yum!!!
