...sharing this especially with our family in Maine :-) Each of the 4th grade students complete State Coin Projects where they have to create a state coin and then write about it - Hannah was assigned Maine!!! She discovered some great facts that even we didn't know :-)
My state coin reflects what is special about the state of Maine. The people of Maine’s favorite motto is “Dirigo”, which means “I direct”. Maine’s called the pine tree state because 89%of Maine is forests with mostly pine trees in them. The state bird is the wonderful chickadee. 90% of the country’s toothpick supply is produced in Maine. Maine produces over 72.5 million pounds of lobster a year and 99% of the blueberries in the country. Potatoes rank sixth in production nationally in 2006 with 58,000 acres in production. The city of Eastport is considered the first place in the United States to receive the rays of the morning sun. Maine is super special to me because my grandparents live there. The state of Maine makes the United States special.
